Kia smiled as she sat with him. After a while she looked at him questioningly. “Are you hungry? There’s a place a block away that has beignets. We could get some and take them to where I’m staying. It’s not far from here.”

Doug returned to the house expecting Mica to be there. He walked inside looking for her. "Mica, Mica." Doug said as he looked around. He sighed when he hadn't heard from her. "She must be so distraught. I....I wish I could tell her." Doug said as he walked back out into the woods in the direction Mica had taken. He was beginning to get worried, something felt wrong.

Bruce nodded. He hadn't noticed just how hungry he was. It had been more than two days since his last decent meal, always moving from place to place. "That sounds great," he said as he stood and took her hand in his. "My love."

Mica looked around at the shadow warriors surrounding her. She smiled as she welcomed the diversion from her thoughts. Her feelings continued to churn within her as she focused them into a weapon to be used against her foe. She felt the short swords appear in her hands as she lunged at the nearest of the warriors. The sound of metal on metal rang out across the fading night as she fought. The first of the warriors fell at her feet but more were there to take his place. Mica began to fight harder, her blades moving so fast they appeared but a blur of light within the darkness. Her voice sounded in a feral scream as she merged with the essence of Kyra. So began the dance of death.

Kia took Bruce’s hand and led him to the café. She bought the beignets and coffee, handing him a cup then led him through the streets of the quarter to her home. The buildings were crammed one on top of the other and the streets were lined with the solid stone façade. Most were unremarkable but all had balconies looking over the streets below. “I know it doesn’t look it on the surface but this area is one of the most beautiful I have seen.” She led him down two blocks then stopped before one of the doors on the street. She opened it and led him inside. The house was narrow but long and had three levels. Kia smiled as she entered. The exterior hid the beauty of the interior well. Once inside, the house was spacious and she led him through the hall to the kitchen. She opened the French doors and led him to the hidden sanctuary. There, behind the ugliness of the front of the house, lay an exquisite garden paradise. She sat on a large swing near the waterfall in the center of the lush plants that grew abundantly. The stone path weaved in and out the length and width of the garden. She looked at Bruce as she handed him a bag of the square donuts with the powdered sugar coating. Kia began to eat as she looked over the beauty of her private garden. “Things are not always as they appear. There is beauty even in the ugliest of things.”

Bruce smiled as he sat and looked around the garden. Kia was right. The garden was a haven of beauty hidden beneath a blanket of ugliness. "It's amazing," he said honestly as he took a bite of one of his donuts. "I don't think I've ever seen anything this beautiful."

Kia smiled. “The whole of the French Quarter is this way. Beauty hidden beneath ugliness. You just have to take the time to search it out.” She looked at him as he ate. “Is that going to be enough? You seem…hungry.”

Bruce smiled, nodding as he swallowed. "It'll be enough," he said as he put his arm behind her on the bench and crossed his legs. "Food is just something that fills your stomach and keeps it from growling. I don't have to eat much to be fine."

Kia smiled as she leaned closer to Bruce. She pressed her lips to his as she softly kissed him. As she pulled back, she licked her lips, her eyes sparkled with the mid morning light. “Sorry you had a little bit of powdered sugar right here.” She leaned forward and kissed him again, this time lingering as her kiss grew more passionate in its intensity.

Doug heard Mica fighting in the distance. He ran to where she was only to see that she was handling the situation with ease as she elegantly fought off the shadows. He leaned against a tree as he watched her, how beautiful she was, so methodic in her rhythms as she killed them off one by one. He smiled as he watched her from the shadows.

Mica continued to fight as more and more shadow warriors appeared. She took out the frustration and hurt she felt on the foes before her. Her breath came fast as she moved without thinking. Suddenly she felt Doug somewhere close and looked toward where she felt him for just a minute. That was long enough for the shadow warriors to take advantage of her lowered guard. She felt the blade pierce her side as the warriors descended on her. Mica lay at the bottom of a huge pile of warriors, trapped.

Bruce smiled at Kia as she told him of the sugar on his lips. "Oh, then by all means clean it," he said as she kissed him again. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly to him as his kiss grew in intensity and passion.

Kia felt her breath leave her as she pressed herself tighter against Bruce. Her bag of donuts crushed between them but she didn’t care. “I love beignets.” She told him as she kissed him again. Her tongue darted between his lips as her tongue sought the warmth of his.

Doug ran towards her as he screamed out in pain. "Mica! Mica! Hold on! He screamed as he pulled the shadows off one by one breaking there necks as he did. He finally made it to the bottom of the pile where he saw Mica, her side pierced with a blade. He picked her up in his arms as he ran back to the house. She was badly injured and falling in and out of consciousness. "What have I done?" Doug thought to himself as he carried her.

Bruce held Kia tightly to him as he stood and laid her down on the garden floor, himself above her. He never broke from their passionate kiss, only increasing the desire within him. "Kia," he whispered as he trailed a hand beneath her shirt. "Stop me, or I'll love you again."

Mica felt the weight of the warriors on her lessen as she fought to stay conscious. When the last of the warriors was removed, Doug’s face was the last thing she saw. Her mind drifted in and out of consciousness and she knew things were grave. She felt no pain, only the strong pull of sleep beckoning her to release herself to its gentle embrace. “No.” Mica said softly as she fought the desire to succumb to it.

Kia felt her passion rising as Bruce gathered her into his arms and laid her on the garden floor. She kissed him passionately as her hands found skin beneath his shirt. “I can’t.” she said softly as her hands gently lifted his shirt up.
